Fire Your Web Designer If They Say This
August 19, 2026
"We'll make it look amazing."
Run.
Not because looking good is bad. But because that's the wrong priority and it tells you everything about how this person thinks. They think a website is a visual project. It's not. It's a sales tool that happens to be visual.
Other things that should worry you
"SEO is extra." Building a site without SEO is like building a store with no door. If search optimization isn't baked into the build from day one, you'll pay to redo it later. It should be included. Always.
"We'll use this great template." Templates are fine for personal blogs. For a business that needs to rank locally and generate leads? You need something built around your specific services, areas, and customers. Not something 4,000 other businesses are also using.
"The site will be ready in two weeks." If someone can build your business site in two weeks, they're not doing keyword research. They're not writing optimized content. They're not thinking about conversion paths. They're just throwing up pages.
"Don't worry about content, we'll add placeholder text." Content IS the website. The words on the page are what Google reads, what customers read, and what determines whether someone calls you or not. If content is an afterthought, everything else falls apart.
What a good builder says instead
"What keywords do your customers search for?" "What does your ideal customer need to see to pick up the phone?" "How many leads per month do you want this to generate?" "What's your average job worth?"
They're thinking about outcomes. Not pixels. That's who you want building your site.
