ChatGPT Is the New Referral
September 23, 2026
Think about how referrals work. Someone trusts a friend. The friend says "call this guy, he did my roof, great work." Done. The trust transfers. You get the call without having to sell yourself.
ChatGPT works the same way now. Someone trusts the AI. They ask "who's the best roofer in Halifax?" The AI answers with a name. The trust transfers. They call without checking five other options.
The difference? Your friend refers one person at a time. AI refers thousands simultaneously.
How to become the recommendation
AI tools form opinions based on what's available about you online. They read your reviews. They read your website. They read mentions of you on other sites. Then they synthesize a recommendation.
The businesses getting recommended right now typically share three traits: lots of positive reviews across multiple platforms, a well-structured website with detailed service information, and mentions on third-party sites like directories and local publications.
None of that is revolutionary. It's the same stuff that helps you rank on Google. But the payoff is amplified because AI gives direct recommendations rather than a list of options.
One conversation I had last month
A landscaper in Riverview told me he got a call from a new customer who said "ChatGPT recommended you." He had no idea what that meant at first. But the customer had literally typed "best landscaper Riverview NB" into ChatGPT and his company came back as the answer.
He has 110 Google reviews, a solid website with specific service pages for each area, and he's listed on about 20 directories. He didn't do any of this for AI specifically. He just did good marketing. But AI noticed.
That's the play. Good marketing across the board makes you the obvious answer regardless of where people are searching.
